A video of a hacker talking to a young girl through her family’s Ring camera has been recently shared on social media platforms. The camera was accessed by the hacker in the bedroom of three young girls and was heard when it started playing the song “Tiptoe through the tulips”. The young girl asks “Who’s there?” when the hacker replies “It’s Santa, it’s your best friend.”. The girls parents told WMC Action News 5 that they had recently bought the device and had not set up two-factor authentication.

The home security camera is just one of the several devices offered by the Ring Company. Like all smart devices connected to the internet, it was an easy target for the hacker as it was not properly secured, security expert Ken Munro explained. “This is a stark reminder that connected devices can be compromised if users don’t take the basic precautions”.

“Customer trust is important to us and we take the security of our devices seriously. While we are still investing this issue and are taking appropriate steps to protect our devices based on our investigation, we are able to confirm this incident is in no way related to a break or compromise of Rings security” as spokesman said. “As a precaution, we highly and openly encourage all Ring users to enable two-factor authentication on their Ring account, add Shared Users (instead of sharing credentials), using strong passwords and also regularly change their passwords.
